Empower Your Birth with Your Partner by Your Side

At Foundations Pelvic Health, our pelvic floor physical therapists help so many through pregnancy and help talk you through the ins and outs of labor and delivery. Our practice loves to support mamas-to-be throughout all the trimesters, and one of favorite offerings is inviting your partner to join a pelvic floor physical therapy appointment with you as your due date approaches!

Birth Prep Visits with Your Partner at Foundations Pelvic Health

At Foundations Pelvic Health, we understand how important it is to feel prepared and supported as you approach labor and birth. Throughout your pregnancy, you’ve been working hard with your pelvic floor PT to strengthen and prepare your body, and we want to make sure your partner also has some support.

Preparing for Your Birth Experience

At our Boston office, preparing for labor and delivery is an ongoing conversation throughout your pregnancy. Around 34 weeks, we’ll schedule a special "Birth Prep" visit to ensure you and your support person are both ready for the labor process.

In appointments leading up to this to this birth prep visit, you and your pelvic floor PT will have had a pelvic floor assessment, reviewed pushing techniques and breathing, and positioning.

During this specific birth prep visit, your pelvic floor PT will confirm your preferences and your birth plans, where you plan to give birth, and any specific preferences or goals you have (epidural, positions, etc. We also encourage your support person — whether it’s a partner, family member, or doula—to attend, as their involvement can be incredibly helpful.

What to Expect During Your Birth Prep Visit

This visit is designed to be an open, collaborative conversation between you, your pelvic floor PT, and your support person. It’s an opportunity to address any concerns, set goals, and discuss how your partner can be an active, supportive participant in your labor. We’ve received wonderful feedback from both patients and their husbands/partners about how empowering and informative these visits are. Partners come away feeling more confident!

Your pelvic floor PT will guide you through:

  • Compression Techniques: Learn techniques to manage pain during contractions and labor through pelvic compression.

  • Leg Positioning for Comfort: Discover how to hold your legs during pushing to facilitate pelvic opening and make the process easier.

  • Proper Pushing Mechanics: Receive hands-on guidance and instruction for the most effective and comfortable way for you to push.

  • Advocating for You: Your partner will learn how to help advocate for you during labor — whether it’s ensuring your comfort, managing pain, or asking about available hospital equipment and options.

  • Labor Positions: Review various labor positions and receive handouts with images of different labor positions to use during your birth.

Postpartum Support and Recovery

At the end of your birth prep visit, we’ll also discuss the immediate postpartum period—everything from your first postpartum poop to body mechanics when caring for your newborn. Your partner will be equipped with the knowledge to continue advocating for you in the days following your birth.

This visit is a wonderful opportunity to prepare together, learn practical tools, and strengthen your bond as you approach one of life’s most transformative moments. We’re here to ensure that you feel supported every step of the way!
